Why Alcazaba of Malaga matters

The Alcazaba is a Moorish fortress-palace that climbs up a hill above the city centre. Its lush gardens, fountains and arched courtyards are lovely, and from the walls you look across the port and the sea. At the foot of the hill are the remains of a Roman theatre. Climb on to the Gibralfaro castle above.

Talking points

  • It dates from the Moorish period, around the eleventh century.
  • A Roman theatre sits at the foot of the hill.
  • The upper walls give views of the port.
