Why Cueva de Nerja matters

On the coast east of Malaga lies the Nerja Cave, a series of giant caverns filled with stalactites and columns. Prehistoric people lived here, and paintings have been found in the deeper galleries. A concert hall of sorts, the main chamber hosts a music festival. The seaside town of Nerja is nearby.

Talking points

  • It contains enormous stalactite and stalagmite formations.
  • Prehistoric people used the cave.
  • It sits just above the Mediterranean coast.
