Why Alexander Nevsky Cathedral matters

This huge cathedral dominates the skyline with its gold-plated domes and green roofs. It was built in the early twentieth century in memory of Russian soldiers who died in the war that freed Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. Inside, you find marble, mosaics and a hushed atmosphere. A crypt below holds a museum of icons.
