Why Sofia matters

Sofia is one of those capitals where history is simply part of daily life. Roman walls sit in metro stations, an early Christian church stands a few steps from a leafy boulevard, and the huge golden domes of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral glitter above it all. Behind the city rises Vitosha mountain, so you can go from museum to forest trail in under an hour. Cafes, markets and a good food scene make it very easy to love.

Talking points

  • Roman ruins can be seen inside the Serdika metro station.
  • Vitosha mountain is a bus ride from the centre.
  • The golden domes of Alexander Nevsky are the city's icon.
