Why Boyana Church matters

Tucked away on the slopes of Vitosha, this little church has frescoes that are among the finest in medieval Europe. The faces of the saints look strikingly lifelike for the thirteenth century. It's on the UNESCO list, and only a limited number of visitors may enter at a time to protect the paintings.
