Why Appian Way matters

Walk or cycle along stones that Roman soldiers and merchants once used. The Appian Way runs south of the city through a quiet park of pine trees, tombs, catacombs and aqueduct arches. It is best on Sundays, when traffic is limited, and you can rent a bike.

Talking points

  • The road ran from Rome towards southern Italy.
  • Ancient tombs and catacombs line the route.
  • Cycling is the best way to see it.
  • Sunday traffic restrictions make it easier.
