Why Fårö matters

Fårö is the kind of place where you lose track of time. Limestone sea stacks stand along the shore like strange statues, long sandy beaches stretch toward the horizon, and sheep graze behind stone walls. The island was a favourite of filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, who lived and worked here. A short ferry ride from Gotland takes you there, and renting a bike is a lovely way to explore.

Talking points

  • Sea stacks called rauks line parts of the coast.
  • The filmmaker Ingmar Bergman made his home here.
  • A short ferry crosses from Gotland.
