Why Visby matters

Visby feels like a town that stepped out of a storybook. A long medieval wall, with dozens of towers, still wraps around cobbled lanes, ruined churches and rose-covered houses. In the Middle Ages, merchants made it rich as a trading hub on the Baltic, and the stone ruins left behind give the town a romantic, slightly haunted look. Each summer it fills with Swedes on holiday, and in August a medieval week turns the streets into a costumed festival. Visit by ferry or short flight from the mainland.

Talking points

  • The town wall is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Northern Europe.
  • Gotland is reached by ferry or a short flight from the mainland.
  • Medieval Week each August fills the town with costumes and markets.
