Why Visby Town Wall matters

Visby's medieval wall runs for roughly three kilometres around the old town, with tall towers like pepper pots punctuating the stone. It was built to protect the rich merchants of this Baltic trade centre, and the city inside is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk the lane that follows the wall, and you will pass ruined churches, rose gardens and sea views.

Talking points

  • It is among the best-preserved medieval walls in Northern Europe.
  • The whole old town is a UNESCO site.
  • Roses grow along many lanes in summer.
