Why Helsingør matters

Helsingør sits on the narrowest part of the Øresund strait, so close to Sweden that you can see the opposite coast on a clear day. The town is best known for Kronborg, the castle that Shakespeare turned into Elsinore in Hamlet. Behind the harbour the old centre has pretty streets of coloured houses, and a short ride along the coast takes you to one of Denmark's finest modern art museums.

Talking points

  • The Swedish town of Helsingborg is visible across the water.
  • Kronborg Castle is the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet.
  • It is easy to reach from Copenhagen by train in under an hour.
