Why Kastellet matters

Kastellet is a star-shaped fortress with grassy ramparts and a moat, built in the 17th century to defend the city. It is still a military site, but you are welcome to stroll around the ramparts and past the red-painted barracks and windmill. It is a calm break from the city streets and a nice stop on the way to the Little Mermaid. From the walls you look out over the harbour.

Talking points

  • The star shape is classic 17th-century fortress design.
  • You can walk the whole circuit of the grassy ramparts.
  • It is on the footpath to the Little Mermaid.
