Why Nyhavn matters

This is the picture most people have in mind when they think of Copenhagen. Brightly painted townhouses line a narrow canal, old wooden sailing ships bob alongside, and every café has outdoor tables as soon as the sun appears. The area began as a busy commercial harbour where sailors came ashore, and Hans Christian Andersen lived in several of the houses over the years. Come early in the morning for clear photos, and stay for a canal boat tour or a walk out to the harbour front.

Talking points

  • Hans Christian Andersen lived at several addresses along the canal.
  • It started as a working harbour for sailors and merchants in the 17th century.
  • Canal boat tours leave from here and are a good way to see the city from the water.

Good to know: Cafés on the sunny north side are pricey; walk one block back for cheaper lunch.
