Why Copenhagen Opera House matters

A broad, flat-roofed building on the waterfront with an enormous overhanging roof, the opera house is a major modern landmark. It was a gift from the shipping family behind Maersk. Even if you do not see a performance, it is worth a walk along the harbour to admire the architecture, and guided tours sometimes go behind the scenes.

Talking points

  • It was funded by the family behind the Maersk shipping company.
  • The huge overhanging roof is its most recognisable feature.
  • Ferries and boat tours pass by on the harbour.
