Why Christiansborg Palace matters

Christiansborg is where Danish politics happens, yet much of it is open to visitors. You can walk through the royal reception rooms, see the grand tapestries made for the queen, and descend into the ruins of the medieval castle that once stood on this spot. Then climb the tower for one of the best free views over the city centre. Few other European parliaments let you so easily stand above the whole capital.

Talking points

  • Parliament, the Supreme Court and the Prime Minister's office all share this one building.
  • Ruins of the earliest castle on the site can be explored underground.
  • The tower has a free viewing platform over the city.
