Why Strøget matters

Strøget is the central pedestrian artery of Copenhagen, a string of connected streets and squares that run from the city hall square to Kongens Nytorv and the harbour. Fashion shops, department stores and Danish design brands line the way, with street performers filling the open squares. Dip into the side streets, where you will find quieter cafés, small design shops and old churches that most visitors rush past.

Talking points

  • It links the City Hall Square to Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn.
  • Side streets hide the best small cafés and design shops.
  • It opened to pedestrians in the 1960s, an early experiment that spread across Europe.
