Why Rosenborg Castle matters

Rosenborg looks like a castle from a storybook, with red brick walls, a copper-green roof and towers set in a leafy park. It was built as a summer residence by King Christian IV in the early 17th century, and inside you can walk through rooms that still look much as they did centuries ago. In the basement are the crown jewels and royal regalia, protected behind glass. Afterward the surrounding King's Garden is a favourite picnic spot for locals.

Talking points

  • Christian IV built it as a country retreat that the city later grew around.
  • The crown jewels are displayed in the basement treasury.
  • The King's Garden outside is a favourite local park.
