Why Tivoli Gardens matters

Tivoli is an amusement park that feels more like a garden party. Opened in the 1840s, it blends old wooden rides, flower beds, concert halls and a lake with lanterns that glow once the sun goes down. It is right beside the central station, so it is easy to drop in on a short visit. Even if you skip the rides, an evening stroll here is one of the classic Copenhagen experiences, and the park is transformed again for Halloween and Christmas.

Talking points

  • It has been entertaining Copenhageners since the 1840s.
  • The wooden roller coaster is a real period piece and still in use.
  • In winter the gardens turn into one of the city's best-known Christmas markets.
