Copenhagen

Denmark's capital: colourful harbours, royal palaces, canals, cyclists everywhere and a famously good food scene.

Why Copenhagen matters

Copenhagen feels like a big city that has agreed to slow down. Bikes outnumber cars on many streets, old canals are lined with painted townhouses, and a royal palace sits a short walk from a hundred-year-old amusement park in the middle of town. You can swim in the harbour baths in summer, wander through a self-declared free town, and then sit down to some of the best pastries in Europe. It is compact enough to see the highlights in a couple of days, but you will want longer once you start finding the neighbourhood cafés and design shops.

Talking points

  • Cycling is the default way to get around, with dedicated lanes almost everywhere.
  • Royal palaces, a fairy-tale garden and a fortress all sit within a short walk of each other.
  • The harbour is clean enough for summer swimming at several public harbour baths.
