Why Church of Our Saviour matters

The spire of this baroque church is unmistakable: a golden-topped tower wrapped by a corkscrew staircase that you climb on the outside. The final steps get narrow and exposed, so it is not for the faint-hearted, but the view across the canals of Christianshavn and the whole city is the reward. Check opening conditions first, since the climb closes in bad weather. Inside, the church is surprisingly bright and has a big baroque organ.

Talking points

  • The outside staircase narrows toward the top.
  • The spire gives a view over canal-lined Christianshavn.
  • Climbing is closed in strong winds or ice.
