Why Kronborg Castle matters

Kronborg stands right on the edge of the water at the narrowest point of the Øresund, a Renaissance castle with copper-green roofs and thick walls. For centuries it controlled the passage between the Baltic and the North Sea, collecting a toll from passing ships. Shakespeare set Hamlet here, calling it Elsinore, so you will often find performances of the play staged in the courtyard. Do not miss the dark casemates below, where a statue of a legendary Viking sleeps.

Talking points

  • Passing ships once had to pay a toll to the Danish crown here.
  • Shakespeare's Hamlet is set in a castle called Elsinore.
  • A legend says the Viking hero Holger Danske sleeps in the cellars.
