Why Mycenae matters

Mycenae was the centre of a powerful Bronze Age civilisation. You enter through the Lion Gate, topped by two carved lions, and walk up through the citadel to the royal graves. Homer later told of King Agamemnon here. The big stone walls and hill setting make it dramatic. A domed tomb nearby, the so-called Treasury of Atreus, is just as impressive.

Talking points

  • The Lion Gate is among the oldest monumental sculptures in Europe.
  • Legend links the site to King Agamemnon.
  • The Treasury of Atreus tomb is nearby.
