Why Palamidi Fortress matters

Palamidi crowns the hill above Nafplio and looks like a mountain of walls from below. Built by the Venetians, it covers a large area with bastions, gates and a small chapel. The climb up is by steps or by road, and the view over the town and gulf is excellent. Go early or late to avoid the heat.

Talking points

  • The view over the gulf is the reward for the climb.
  • Several linked bastions form the fortress.
  • The steps are steep, so bring water.

Good to know: Go early to avoid heat, and wear sturdy shoes for the steps.
