Why Nafplio matters

Nafplio is the town people fall for on the Peloponnese. Neoclassical mansions, flowered balconies and pedestrian lanes sit beneath a Venetian fortress, and a small island castle sits in the bay. It was an early capital of modern Greece, which explains the elegant squares. Stroll the old town in the morning, climb up for views, then use it as a base for Epidaurus and Mycenae, both within easy reach. It is relaxed, photogenic and very good for a weekend.

Talking points

  • It was an early capital of the modern Greek state, and the grand squares show it.
  • The seafront walk and the old town lanes are all easily done on foot.
  • Epidaurus and Mycenae are both a short drive away.
