Why Ostrów Tumski matters

Cross the little bridge from the university quarter and the city quiets down. Ostrów Tumski is where Wrocław began, and it is now a peaceful district of Gothic churches, cobbled lanes and a cathedral with twin spires. At dusk a lamplighter still lights the gas lamps by hand. A walk across the Tumski Bridge is also a local tradition, as couples fasten padlocks to its railings.

Talking points

  • Gas lamps here are still lit by hand at dusk.
  • The cathedral's twin towers are a landmark of Wrocław.
