Why Wrocław matters

Wrocław sits on the Oder river and its many channels, so the old centre is full of bridges, islands and riverside walks. The Market Square is surrounded by pastel townhouses and a gothic town hall, and just beyond it you reach Ostrów Tumski, the cathedral island, where gas lamps are still lit by hand at dusk. Look down while you walk and you will find small bronze dwarfs on pavements and corners, a playful tradition that began as a protest. It is a young, creative city and a good one to explore on foot.

Talking points

  • Little bronze dwarf statues are scattered all around the centre; spotting them is a game.
  • Ostrów Tumski is one of the most atmospheric corners, with its cathedral and old gas lamps.
  • The city history is a mix of Bohemian, Habsburg, Prussian and Polish influences.
