Why Raclawice Panorama matters

Imagine standing inside a painting. The Racławice Panorama is a gigantic circular canvas depicting a battle from the 1794 Kościuszko Uprising, and when you step onto the viewing platform the battle surrounds you in 360 degrees. Sound and lighting add to the illusion. It was originally painted in Lwów, and the story of how it came to Wrocław is itself remarkable.

Talking points

  • The painting surrounds you in 360 degrees.
  • It was painted in the 19th century and has an eventful history of relocation.
