For storytellers

Why Cathedral of Saint Domnius matters

The building began its life as a tomb for the emperor, and was later converted into a church, which makes it a rare mix of eras. Step inside and you stand under an ancient octagonal dome. Climb the bell tower next door for a close-up view of the palace roofs, the harbour and the islands. It is one of the best viewpoints in the city.

Talking points

  • It started as an emperor's mausoleum before becoming a church.
  • The bell tower offers a roof-level view of the old town.
  • It sits on the palace's central courtyard.
