Why Split matters

Split is where ancient Rome and everyday life share the same walls. The old centre grew inside a vast palace built for a Roman emperor, so you buy bread, drink wine and sit on the steps of a courtyard that is nearly two thousand years old. Outside the walls the Riva promenade is the city's living room, and Marjan hill gives you pine forest and sea views ten minutes away. It is also the main gateway to the Dalmatian islands.

Talking points

  • People still live and run shops inside the palace walls.
  • The Riva waterfront is where the whole city strolls in the evening.
  • Ferries to Hvar, Brac and Vis leave from the harbour next to the old town.
