Why Salona Archaeological Site matters

Before Split became important, Salona was the big city of the region. Walk through broken walls, a theatre and the outline of an amphitheatre in a quiet landscape of cypress and grass. It is much calmer than the palace, and it helps explain why the emperor chose this place for his retirement. Sturdy shoes and a bit of imagination help.

Talking points

  • Salona was a large Roman city close to the palace.
  • An amphitheatre and early Christian ruins can be seen.
  • It is often almost empty.
