Why Cēsis Medieval Castle matters

The ruins of this castle date back to the Middle Ages, when the Livonian Order ruled much of the region. At the entrance you are given an oil lantern, which you need to climb the dark spiral staircases of the tower. Next door a pretty manor house, built later, holds a small museum. A park with a pond completes the scene.

Talking points

  • Visitors get an oil lantern to explore the dark towers.
  • The adjacent manor house holds exhibits on the town's history.
