Why Gauja National Park matters

The Gauja river winds through a deep valley of pine forest and red sandstone cliffs, and castles and ruins appear on the hills at intervals. It is a landscape for walking, cycling and canoeing, and it is only an hour from Riga. In autumn the leaves turn gold, and in winter people come for skiing and sledding. Sigulda and Cēsis are the best bases.

Talking points

  • The valley has sandstone cliffs, caves and castles in a short distance.
  • Canoeing the river is a popular summer activity.
