Why East Side Gallery matters

This is the longest open-air gallery you will ever walk. A long section of the Berlin Wall beside the Spree was painted by artists after 1989, and the murals, including the famous brotherly kiss, turn a symbol of division into a canvas for hope. It is free and always open. Try to see it in the morning, when it is quieter, and look closely, as the art is regularly restored.

Talking points

  • It is a surviving stretch of the Wall turned into murals
  • It runs along the Spree river
  • Murals are restored from time to time
