Why Brandenburg Gate matters

If Berlin had a front door, this would be it. The gate stands at the end of the grand boulevard Unter den Linden, topped by a chariot and the goddess of victory. For decades it sat just behind the Wall, unreachable from either side, and when it reopened in 1989 it became the world's picture of a divided country coming together. Today it is a free, open square where people gather, busk and take photographs.

Talking points

  • For years the gate stood in a fenced-off border zone
  • Its chariot sculpture is a goddess of victory driving four horses
  • The square in front hosts big public events, from concerts to New Year's Eve
