Why Reichstag Building matters

The Reichstag has seen a lot: imperial pomp, a famous fire, wartime ruin, Cold War neglect and reunification. Today it houses the German parliament, and a mirrored glass dome added in the 1990s lets you spiral up above the debating chamber and look over the city. The idea is democratic transparency, citizens literally walking above their lawmakers. It is one of Berlin's best free experiences, if you plan ahead.

Talking points

  • The glass dome symbolises transparency in government
  • Visits need advance registration on the official site
  • The building survived fire, war and Cold War division
