Why Berlin Wall Memorial matters

Most of the Wall is gone, and that is why this stretch matters. Along Bernauer Strasse, a preserved piece of the border strip shows how the barrier really worked: two walls, a patrolled zone in between and watchtowers. A viewing platform and a documentation centre tell the stories of the people who lived beside it. It is moving and well explained.

Talking points

  • It preserves a real section of the border strip
  • A visitor centre has a viewing platform
  • Exhibits tell personal stories from the divided city
