Why Hackesche Höfe matters

Duck through a doorway near Hackescher Markt and you step into a series of linked courtyards. The facades of the first one are covered in colourful Art Nouveau tiles, and behind it more courtyards hold cafes, small galleries, boutiques and a cinema. It is a lovely example of Berlin's hidden-courtyard culture.
