Why Potsdam matters

Potsdam is where Prussian kings came to escape. Just beyond Berlin's southwest edge, a landscape of lakes and woods holds a collection of palaces and gardens, the best known being Sanssouci, a hilltop summer retreat. It is a half-day train ride from the capital, but easy to stretch into a full day of strolling, picnics and royal gossip.

Talking points

  • Sanssouci was a summer palace of the Prussian king Frederick the Great
  • The parks and palaces are a World Heritage Site
  • It is a short train ride from central Berlin
  • A Dutch-style quarter of brick houses is worth a wander
