Why Tiergarten matters

The Tiergarten is Berlin's green lung, a huge central park of lakes, lawns and woods. It was once a royal hunting ground and today people jog, cycle, sunbathe and paddle boats here. Walk from the Brandenburg Gate to the Victory Column through the trees and you will understand why locals love it. In summer, there are beer gardens on its edges.

Talking points

  • It sits right in the middle of the city
  • Row boats can be rented on the lake in season
  • The Victory Column stands at its centre
