Why Sanssouci Park and Palace matters

Sanssouci means without worries, and Frederick the Great meant it. He had this small, golden-yellow palace built on a vine-covered terrace as a private retreat from court life. Inside, the rooms are intimate and exquisite, and outside, the park rolls on with fountains, temples and other palaces. Potsdam is an easy trip from Berlin, but give yourself a full day.

Talking points

  • The name means without worries in French
  • The palace sits on a terraced hillside
  • Several more palaces are scattered through the park
