Why Prague Castle matters

This is not one building but a whole hilltop district. Inside the walls you will find St Vitus Cathedral, old palaces, a lane of tiny houses and courtyards that open to views over the red roofs. It has been a seat of power for centuries and is still home to the president's office. Give yourself a couple of hours and go early before the tour groups arrive.

Talking points

  • The complex is often described as one of the largest ancient castle complexes in the world.
  • St Vitus Cathedral inside the grounds took centuries to complete.
  • The changing of the guard at the gates draws a crowd.

Good to know: Arrive close to opening time to beat the tour groups; the grounds can be entered without a ticket but the main interiors need one.
