Why Josefov Jewish Quarter matters

Josefov is Prague's former Jewish ghetto and is now an elegant district of boutiques and synagogues. Here you find the Old-New Synagogue, one of the oldest still in use in Europe, and the Old Jewish Cemetery, whose headstones are crowded together in layers. It is quiet, moving and rich in history.

Talking points

  • The Old-New Synagogue is a medieval building still used for worship.
  • The Old Jewish Cemetery has headstones crowded in many layers.
  • Several synagogues tell the story of the community through museum displays.
