Why Prague matters

Prague is the kind of city that makes you slow down and look up. Spires, domes and painted facades crowd the skyline, and the Vltava curls through the middle with a castle watching from above. Walk the cobbled lanes of the Old Town at dawn and you can almost have it to yourself. Come back at night for a pint in a vaulted cellar and the glow of lit-up towers. It is photogenic, walkable and surprisingly easy on the wallet once you leave the busiest streets.

Talking points

  • The skyline earned Prague the nickname 'city of a hundred spires'.
  • The Old Town and Lesser Town sit on opposite banks, joined by the famous stone bridge.
  • Czech beer is often cheaper than water in traditional pubs away from the main squares.
