Why Wenceslas Square matters

Technically a boulevard, Wenceslas Square runs downhill from the National Museum with a statue of the patron saint at the top. It has been the stage for key moments of modern Czech history and today is a busy mix of shops, arcades, cafes and neon. Not the prettiest corner of Prague, but you cannot understand the city without seeing it.

Talking points

  • A statue of St Wenceslas stands in front of the National Museum.
  • It has hosted major gatherings in modern Czech history.
  • Art Nouveau buildings hide among the shop fronts.
