Why Trakai Island Castle matters

The castle rises straight from the water and looks as if it was designed for a fairy tale. It was built in the Middle Ages by the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, fell into ruin and was reconstructed in the 20th century. Cross the long wooden footbridges to reach it, and then explore the courtyard and the museum rooms. Rent a rowboat afterwards for the best photograph.

Talking points

  • The castle was a residence of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania.
  • It was largely rebuilt in the 20th century after centuries of ruin.
