Why Vilnius Cathedral matters

With its columned front, the cathedral looks more like a Greek temple than a church. It stands on a spot that has been sacred since pre-Christian times. Beside it is a tall belfry that was once a defensive tower. On the square outside is a stone with the word Stebuklas, meaning miracle, and tradition says that if you stand on it, turn around three times and make a wish, it will come true.

Talking points

  • The Stebuklas tile on the square is a place to make a wish.
  • The belfry stands apart from the cathedral.
