Why Gediminas Tower matters

A short climb up a wooded hill brings you to a small brick tower, the last standing piece of the city's old hill castle. Inside is a modest museum, but the real reward is the view from the top, a sea of red roofs, church spires and, in the distance, modern towers. It is the national symbol of Vilnius, and the best place to understand how the city is laid out.

Talking points

  • The tower is a national symbol.
  • The view over the red roofs is one of the best in the Baltics.
