Why Gate of Dawn matters

Of the several gates that once pierced the old city walls, only this one remains. It also contains a small chapel up above the street, which holds a famous painting of the Virgin Mary that is venerated by Catholics and Orthodox alike. You will often see people kneeling in the street below, because the chapel opens onto the road. It is an unusual, moving place.

Talking points

  • It is the only remaining gate of the old defensive wall.
  • People pray in the street under the chapel window.
