Why Vilnius Old Town matters

Walk through the old town of Vilnius and you quickly lose count of the churches. Gothic, Renaissance and, above all, baroque, they stand beside tiny courtyards, cafés and university buildings. Wander without a map down Pilies Street, peek into the arched courtyards and look up at the ceilings. It is a living, working part of the city, not a museum.

Talking points

  • The old town is one of the largest in Europe.
  • Baroque churches are everywhere, often with surprisingly bright interiors.
  • Hidden courtyards are a highlight; many are open to the public.
