Why Viking Ship Museum Roskilde matters

Five Viking-age ships were found in the fjord, deliberately sunk long ago to block an approach to the town. They were painstakingly recovered and are now displayed in a light-filled hall by the water. Outside there is a boatyard where craftspeople build replicas the old way, and in summer you can sometimes take a short trip on a reconstructed ship. It is a good way to understand how the Vikings travelled.

Talking points

  • Five ships were found in the fjord, sunk to block a channel.
  • A working boatyard builds replicas with traditional methods.
  • In summer you can sometimes sail on a reconstructed ship.
