Why Bascarsija matters

This is the old heart of Sarajevo. Narrow lanes are lined with small workshops where craftspeople hammer copper into coffee sets, and cafes serve strong Bosnian coffee in tiny pots. The smell of grilled cevapi drifts through the evening air. In the middle sits the wooden Sebilj fountain, a favourite meeting spot. Come early before the lanes fill up.

Talking points

  • Coppersmiths still hammer coffee sets by hand.
  • The wooden Sebilj fountain is the quarter's best-known landmark.
  • Try cevapi in a small grill house.
